Tea cocktail – Vanilla Matcha Milkshake

This distinctly adult green tea and vanilla milkshake is smooth, frosty and deliciously creamy.

Matcha is a powdered green tea from Japan that is recognised for its high antioxidants and you can't go anywhere at the moment without coming across a matcha-infused something-or-other. 

This cocktail is all too easy to drink - and even easier to make! 

One thing to note before you get behind the bar and start mixing - not all matcha is created equal. Good quality matcha is expensive. Choose what you can afford and purchase from a reputable tea company that provides detailed information about the grade, provenance and harvest season. The younger the better, and if your budget extends that far, opt for the ceremonial or competition grade variety. You won't be sorry and you'll taste the difference.

Ingredients

1 cup good quality vanilla bean ice cream

1/2 cup milk

1 teaspoon competition grade matcha (try to avoid kitchen or cooking grade)

1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 teaspoon honey

30 mls vanilla vodka - we use Absolute Vanilla

Directions (makes one serving)

  1. Whisk the milk and matcha together – we suggest using a chasen, a special Japanese matcha whisk, but if you don’t have one to hand, a regular kitchen whisk will do.
  2. Add the matcha milk mixture to a blender and combine with remaining ingredients
  3. Blitz on medium to high until smooth
  4. Choose to serve over ice or directly into your glass - garnish however you choose. Blueberries and mint work nicely.
